Joining a small team of incredibly talented people, we were collectively tasked with the design of cover, content and mascot design for the first edition of the brand’s on going publication, the theme being: Magic.
Of the tasks set, we were responsible for the creation of the book’s characters and the front cover.
It was essential that we captured the brand’s existing identity and aesthetic, while getting creative and evoking emotion through the character’s designs.

It was essential that we captured the brand’s existing identity and aesthetic, while getting creative and evoking emotion through the character’s designs.
The ideas behind the characters developed from the Latitude Festival project. Our client wanted to keep the heads with various elements as part of the book, so we began sketching concepts that went further than the initial ideas.
Key points were that the characters couldn’t look too alien but also remained genderless
After creating designs that were constantly changing and filled with relevant iconography, it was brought to our attention that they bore a striking resemblance to ‘Kokopelli’s’. It was also noted that they could be friendlier in appearance.
This meant we had to take the designs a step further by going back to the sketchbook, giving them more personality and emotion.

The cover artwork went through multiple stages of development to make sure the entire content of the book, compiled by multiple people, was accurately represented in the design.
